Shetland and the Island of Unst in particular host a large population of archaeological sites. Ancient remnants of several thousand years of successive cultures are buried throughout the islands including Pictish, Stone Age, and Viking. These sites are left largely unexcavated out in fields where the public is allowed free access. The Archaeology Pavilion excavates an existing Stone Age ruin allowing people to experience the original ancient stone walls while simultaneously referencing the original monumentality of the Broch.
